Located between the Manasquan River and the Barnegat Bay adjacent to the Jersey Shore, Point Pleasant
Borough is like many other waterfront communities that offer scenic vistas but have few areas for expansion. Densely populated, the Borough struggles to meet the demand for increasing open space needs with
competing land uses.
Brownfield Redevelopment Solutions, Inc. (BRS) partnered with TRC Environmental Corporation
(TRC) to evaluate Point Pleasant’s natural resources and recreational amenities in hopes of creating future
or improving current opportunities. To date, BRS has spearheaded three environmental planning projects
and also assisted the Borough in obtaining funding for these efforts.
Open Space and Recreation Plan: BRS coordinated the field survey of more than 100 sites and conducted public meetings regarding current and potential open space and recreational properties in the Borough.
These efforts culminated in BRS’s preparation of the Borough’s Open Space and Recreation Plan, providing the
Open Space Committee with a structured evaluation process for property acquisitions. The Plan also adheres to
requirements set forth by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Green Acres Program,
making the Borough eligible for future site acquisition funds under the Planning Incentive Grant program.
Natural Resources Inventory: In conjunction with the development of the Borough’s Open Space and
Recreation Plan, BRS managed the development of mapping components to supplement the Borough’s
existing online Natural Resources Inventory.
Canal Walk Evaluation Recommendations and Implementation Plan: BRS oversaw the development of the Canal Walk Plan, This study assessed existing conditions, opportunities, and constraints involved
with the potential creation of a pedestrian and biking trail network along the Point Pleasant Canal. This resulted
in a report that includes recommendations related to the design and potential implementation of a pedestrian-oriented network along a Canal of great environmental and historical significance creating a much needed
recreational amenity in the community.
