In 1995, the City of Trenton, NJ was honored as one of the initial recipients of the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency (USEPA) Brownfields Pilot Grant. Subsequently USEPA awarded the city a Showcase
Community designation, a Supplemental Pilot Grant and 2 petroleum and one hazardous substance
assessment Brownfield Grant cumulatively totaling $1.4 million in pre-remedial assessment funds for the
city’s brownfield program. Trenton also received $2 million in USEPA Brownfield Cleanup Revolving
Loan funds and $2.4 million in cleanup grants.
- BRS prepared and submitted all recent USEPA grant proposals. All five 2003 applications were
awarded, garnering $1.2 million for the City of Trenton’s brownfields program pre-remedial and
remediation activities. The 2004, 2005, and 2006, cleanup grant applications provided Trenton with
an additional $1.2 million in USEPA remediation funds.
Brownfield Redevelopment Solutions, Inc. (BRS), on behalf of the City of Trenton, secured the majority
of these funds and administered grant and project requirements as well. BRS coordinates with the state and
federal regulatory agencies to:
- Implement the city’s grant work plan
- Assist with grant eligible activity determination, act as liaison between the city and the USEPA
for all grant matters
- Review and evaluate subcontractors’ environmental assessments
- Prepare and submit quarterly reports
- Maintain and extensive site tracking database
- Support the city’s brownfield advisory group and maintain grant cost category budgets
BRS also manages USEPA grant fund projects, obtaining funding from other sources to leverage funds and
ensure successful work plan project implementation.
